Tristan Peigné's memoir is an inspirational story of resilience, faith, and joy. Although Tristan faces numerous challenges on his career path—dyslexia, homelessness, illness, and injury--Tristan never gives up. As the son of a Caucasian-French mother and African American father with Cherokee roots, he hopes to help people who face a racial identity crisis or struggle for approval. Tristan likens being biracial to playing football and basketball simultaneously. "Should I punt or dunk?" he wonders. "Like a zebra that’s unsure if its skin is black or white under the striped fur, I realized at an early age that I didn’t belong to either race. For decades, I didn’t see any brown-skinned students in my training classes, in the studios where I taught, or on the competition dance floor."
Despite the hurdles, Tristan thrived in the elite and predominantly white sport of ballroom dancing. "Instead of identifying as black, white, brown, yellow, red, or a mixture of these colors, I became comfortable in my unique skin. I hope to show those who feel marginalized or ostracized that approval of others can be the natural outcome if they accept and love themselves."
